Verbs
HHFTS Interview

Formerly performing as the alias Knowdaverbs with his latest album Unlocked, his new shortened moniker, Verbs was unveiled. Verbs has made an etch in hip-hop by co-hosting BET's Rap City, appearing on Jam Zone, and performing on the televised Teen Summit Live. Verbs has opened for such mainstream artists as Jay-Z, Outkast, A Tribe Called Quest, Camp Lo , and De La Soul. When Gotee Records released the single "What You Rock Now" hit topped R&R's ccm Rhythmic chart for 11 straight weeks. The followed-up single “Live To The Music” which was the second time in the Rhythmic chart's history, that a song debuted at #1. Verbs has proven to hold the crown as one of the most talented and felt artists in this genre.

How did you begin rapping and who was your inspiration?

I started writing at the age of 12, shortly after I gave my life to the Lord.  I had no prior experience in rhyming, I was pretty much more into the dance aspect of the culture.  As far as inspiration I don't think I had one particular artist/crew that inspired me, but there were certain things about certain artist/groups that I was inspired by.

You recently shorted your former name Knowdaverbs to Verbs, what influenced you to change?

Didn't really see it as a change per say, people always referred to me as VERBS for short, and a lot of people had trouble with the pronunciation of KNOWDAVERBS, so I figured it would be a bad move to shorten it.  I'm still KNOWDA though!

How did the collaboration with Grits on Plagiarism come about?

Well, when I first moved to Nashville Grits was pretty much the only folks I knew, and I was I had been going out on the road with them  for a while up to the point of recording that record. BUT the very first collab I did with them was on their first release MENTAL RELEASES on a song called SCREEN DOOR.

How did you hook up with Gotee Records?

It was pretty much them taking notice of what I did from working with GRITS & OOE which ended up in them offering me a deal.

What do you think listeners will hear on your latest release Unlocked?

I tried to take elements that I thought worked best  on the first to albums THE SYLLABUS & THE ACTION FIGURE and fine tune'em up and dump that material into UNLOCKED.

What do you feel is your favorite track off the album?

I have few joints that I tend to take a liking to on the record 1. Live To The Music 2.Love Triangle 3.What You Rock Now! 4. Pre-Paid

What inspires your songs?

Learning things.  Different things God brings me thru or shows me through living everyday life that I hope will connect with someone else.

Before the release of Unlocked you were in South Africa , what were you doing there?

I was doing some ministry in the High Schools out there as well as coordinating a early release of the album out there in SA.

What would the ultimate reward for you be?

I know it may sound cliche, but the ultimate reward to me IS seeing people going from darkness to light.  Recognizing who Jesus is and what the means for their life, and the quality of life that is available to them thru what Christ did onthe cross.

What can we look forward to in the near future from Verbs?

New music.  I got places to go and people to see! an emcee's work is never done, we all got a commissioning.

Any last words?

We were made new creations in Christ, the only way our new nature can survive is a daily intake of the word. Stay worded up and Walk Like Champions!
